Lithuania enters the European sailing spotlight today as Klaipėda hosts the ORC European Championship for the first time.
From 7–15 August, some of Europe’s strongest offshore racing teams will compete in Lithuanian waters, bringing high-level international sailing to the Baltic coast and marking a major milestone for the country’s maritime community.
Crews from Germany, Denmark, Sweden, Estonia, Norway and other European countries are arriving in Klaipėda, many of them visiting Lithuania for the first time.
Alongside the racing, the Klaipėda Cruise Ship Terminal will become the heart of the event, with a nine-day Regatta Village featuring maritime experiences, exhibitions, activities, entertainment and live music.
A first for Lithuania
The ORC European Championship is one of the key events on Europe’s offshore sailing calendar, attracting experienced international crews and some of the most advanced racing yachts in the sport.
“Hosting this championship in Klaipėda is significant recognition for Lithuania and for our sailing community,” said Mantas Klimantavičius, head of the championship organising team.
“Over the past decade, Lithuanian crews have competed actively and successfully at ORC World and European Championships. That progress has been noticed internationally, and we hope to represent Lithuania strongly in our home waters.”
Hosting the championship also gives Klaipėda an opportunity to present itself to an international sailing audience as both a competition venue and an attractive Baltic destination.
“Klaipėda is opening itself to Europe through this championship,” said Klaipėda Mayor Arvydas Vaitkus.
“It strengthens the visibility of both our city and Lithuania, supports tourism and encourages people to discover the sea from a new perspective. This is not only an intense professional competition, but also a spectacular event for everyone who comes to the waterfront.”
Racing at sea, a maritime festival ashore
While the competition unfolds on the Baltic Sea, the celebration will continue on shore.
Throughout the championship, the Cruise Ship Terminal will host a dedicated Regatta Village designed to bring sailing and maritime culture closer to the public.
Visitors will be able to learn how to tie sailing knots, take part in maritime quizzes and sporting challenges, and join interactive visits aboard the well-known Lithuanian yachts Lietuva and Ambersail.
Children will have their own maritime workshops and activities, while a special photography exhibition marking 100 years of Lithuanian offshore sailing will reveal previously unseen historical images from the archives of the Lithuanian Sea Museum.
“This is an opportunity to introduce more people to maritime culture, sailing and the sea itself,” said Raimundas Daubaras, President of the Lithuanian Sailing Union and head of the championship’s shore programme.
“Our aim is for everyone who visits the Regatta Village to find their own connection with the wind and the sea.”
The opening celebrations will include a ceremonial sailors’ parade through central Klaipėda to the Cruise Ship Terminal.
For the next nine days, Klaipėda will become a meeting point for elite sport, maritime culture and international visitors – offering Europe’s sailing community a closer look at Lithuania and giving local audiences a rare opportunity to experience top-level offshore racing on home waters.
The Klaipėda ORC European Championship runs from 7–15 August.
The championship is funded by Klaipėda City Municipality and partly financed through Lithuania’s state budget, administered by the National Sports Agency.
