A Record-Breaking Amber Necklace Unites Lithuanians Worldwide in Palanga

The 12th World Lithuanian Sports Games celebrate unity through sport, tradition, and a 582-metre-long amber symbol

The 12th World Lithuanian Sports Games, held in the seaside resort of Palanga, stood out not only for their competitive spirit and camaraderie but also for their cultural depth. Among the standout initiatives was the creation of a record-breaking amber necklace – a powerful symbol of unity that exceeded all expectations.

A Living Symbol of Togetherness

Participants from across the globe were invited to contribute to stringing what would become the longest amber necklace in Lithuania. Over three lively days at the bustling Ethno Crafts Yard, located near the Jūratė and Kastytis Square, hundreds of hands worked together, bead by bead, in a symbolic act of solidarity.

This necklace is not a one-time creation. During major celebrations in Palanga, visitors are invited to continue the project, adding to what has become a growing legacy.

From a Goal of 461 Metres to a Stunning 582

Before the Games began, organisers hoped the necklace would reach 461 metres – the length of the Palanga pier. But the response from the global Lithuanian community far surpassed that goal. By the end of the event, the amber strand stretched an impressive 582 metres.

“It’s more than just a symbol,” said Nerijus Stasiulis, the initiator of the project and organiser of activities at the Ethno Crafts Yard. “This is a tangible expression of unity among Lithuanians worldwide. Every bead is a small yet meaningful part of a much larger shared story.”

Cultural Crafting for All

Alongside the necklace project, guests were also invited to create their own amber bracelets and talisman pendants. The response was enthusiastic – over 1,400 bracelets and 1,000 pendants were handcrafted during the festivities.

In total, about 10 kilograms of amber beads – often referred to as “Lithuanian gold” – were used in the necklace alone.

Backed by the Community

The Palanga City Municipality funded the Ethno Crafts Village and offered all activities free of charge to visitors. This generous support helped foster a sense of inclusion and celebration, reinforcing the message that Lithuanians, wherever they may live, are stronger together.

As the 12th World Lithuanian Sports Games came to a close, one thing was clear: the spirit of unity, creativity, and pride is alive and thriving – not only in sport, but also in shared traditions that span oceans and generations.
