The Ministry of the Economy and Innovation is taking another significant step that strengthens the country’s position as a modern, future-focused state. Minister Edvinas Grikšas has signed an order allocating funding for the activities of an Artificial Intelligence (AI) regulatory sandbox – an initiative that will provide Lithuania with even more opportunities to grow, innovate, and confidently advance into the era of cutting-edge technologies.
The aim of the sandbox is to enable Lithuanian companies to test their AI solutions in real-world conditions and ensure compliance with the European Union’s AI Act. Thanks to this decision, Lithuanian businesses will be able to move more swiftly and confidently from an idea to a reliable, market-ready technological product.
“The regulatory sandbox is a strategic investment in Lithuania’s future. Our goal is for Lithuanian companies not only to use AI, but also to create innovative and reliable solutions themselves that can compete on a global scale. The project will provide them with the necessary conditions, tools, and a safe space to experiment,” says Minister of the Economy and Innovation Edvinas Grikšas.
The sandbox will be implemented in the Capital Region as well as the Central and Western Lithuania regions. A total of €3 million in EU funding has been allocated for AI sandbox activities, with €1.5 million designated for each region. The project will be implemented by the Innovation Agency, ensuring smooth and professional execution.
Companies will have access to a valuable package of services: publicly available information about the EU AI Act, practical support for its implementation, testing opportunities, and access to high-performance computing (HPC) resources. Starting from the first quarter of 2026, selected companies will also receive specialized consultations designed to reduce administrative burdens arising from the new regulatory framework.
This initiative is an important part of the 2022-2030 Economic Transformation and Competitiveness Development Programme and aligns with Lithuania’s ambitious goal of becoming a regional leader in innovation. The AI regulatory sandbox will not only expand opportunities for Lithuanian companies but also enhance the country’s overall competitiveness, contribute to the development of advanced, reliable AI products, and accelerate their path to market.
