A national consortium has secured €65 million in EU co-funding to establish LitAI — a state-of-the-art centre dedicated to developing and applying AI technologies. With a total project value of €130 million, LitAI will be the largest AI facility in the Baltic States, co-financed by the EuroHPC Joint Undertaking (EuroHPC JU).
A Major Leap in Digital Innovation
“LitAI marks a strategic milestone in Lithuania’s digital progress,” said Edvinas Grikšas, Minister of the Economy and Innovation.
“This initiative confirms Lithuania’s growing role in Europe’s artificial intelligence and high-performance computing ecosystem. It will boost research, innovation, and directly contribute to sustainable economic growth.”
The Ministry of the Economy and Innovation will oversee the centre’s strategic development and ensure its international competitiveness.
Strengthening Technological Independence
According to Paulius Petrauskas, Vice-Minister of the Economy and Innovation, “LitAI will reinforce Lithuania’s technological independence and national security — our data and AI solutions will be created and processed here, in Lithuania. The project could generate up to €360 million in economic returns, enabling faster, safer, and more efficient public services.”
Transforming Lithuania’s Digital Infrastructure
LitAI will transform the country’s high-performance computing (HPC) capabilities through an independent, AI-optimised infrastructure designed to meet both national and European strategic needs.
Led by Vilnius University, the facility’s core infrastructure will be hosted at the VDC3 data centre of the Lithuanian Radio and Television Centre in Vilnius.
Powering Innovation Across Key Sectors
The LitAI centre will provide more than 80 advanced services, from HPC resources and data storage to accelerator access and innovation support nationwide — extending its benefits to all regions.
Its main focus areas include:
- Cybersecurity
- Green energy
- Smart industry
- Digital health
Collaboration for the Future
The LitAI consortium unites Lithuania’s top universities and public innovation institutions:
Vilnius University, Kaunas University of Technology, Vilnius Gediminas Technical University, Vytautas Magnus University, the State Data Agency, the State Digital Solutions Agency, AB Lithuanian Radio and Television Centre, and the Innovation Agency, among others.
Lithuania is positioning itself as a key hub for AI and advanced computing in Europe — where innovation meets trust, and digital transformation drives sustainable growth.
