Lithuania launches the largest recovery programme in Ukraine to support rehabilitation of veterans

In a resolute display of international solidarity, the Lithuanian Government, backed by Lithuania’s Fund for Development Cooperation and Humanitarian Aid, has launched a landmark programme aimed at the rehabilitation and reintegration of Ukrainian war veterans. This initiative, titled “Rehabilitation and Reintegration of Wounded and Victims of War in Ukraine,” is designed to provide top-tier rehabilitation services for Ukraine‘s freedom defenders, letting them become society’s dignitaries and not succumb to post-war traumas and risks.

From Memorandums to Action

Lithuania’s commitment to this cause is demonstrated through a series of strategic actions, beginning with a vital fact-finding mission to Ukraine last week. A multi-institutional team of experts, organized by the Central Project Management Agency (CPVA), visited key rehabilitation centers to assess and enhance their services.

The mission began at the National Rehabilitation Center “Unbroken” in Lviv, a beacon of resilience providing world-class medical and mental health care to servicemen and civilians who have suffered severe injuries, including limb loss. The Lithuanian delegation, which included representatives from the Ministry of Health, Vilnius City Mental Health Centre, Hila, Broliai Aitvarai Foundation, Oleksandr Tereshchenko Charity Foundation, and NGO Pryncyp, conducted an in-depth review of the center’s facilities and practices.

A Comprehensive Agenda

The team’s agenda was intensive and productive. They engaged with key leaders at “Unbroken,” toured the facilities, and visited the Bryukhovychi rehabilitation center, which is slated for reconstruction with Lithuanian support. The second day was dedicated to psychological rehabilitation, where experts shared their experiences and insights. The third day focused on the Dnipro Regional Spinal Rehabilitation Center at the University Hospital of Dnipro State Medical University. Plans to modernize and enhance this facility were discussed extensively with its head and staff.

Key Insights and Future Plans

The three-day mission culminated in the identification of critical areas for further development and the definition of main activities to be included in the programme. The Lithuanian team’s expertise ensured that the mission was not just about gathering information but also about laying the groundwork for actionable plans.

Restoring Hope and Dignity

This programme, initiated and financed by the Lithuanian Government and Lithuania’s Fund for Development Cooperation and Humanitarian Aid, stands as a testament to Lithuania’s dedication to making a lasting impact. By rebuilding facilities and providing high-quality rehabilitation services, Lithuania is restoring hope and dignity to Ukraine’s heroes who have sacrificed so much.

Together, Lithuania and Ukraine are embarking on a journey of recovery and resilience, demonstrating the power of international cooperation and the profound impact of collective efforts. This initiative not only reflects Lithuania’s values but also serves as a beacon of hope for those in need, showcasing the true meaning of solidarity and compassion.
