The government has committed €1 million to Ukraine for the reconstruction of a children’s hospital in Kyiv, devastated by Russian shelling.
“Regarding the hospital in Ukraine that was shelled, we have received a request for support for the reconstruction of the hospital and we would like to propose €1 million for the Ukrainian population affected by the military aggression of the Russian Federation,” Finance Minister Gintarė Skaistė announced at a cabinet meeting.
“We want to help Ukraine rebuild its destroyed infrastructure as soon as possible and invite other countries to join us,” she added.
On Monday, Russia launched a massive missile attack on various Ukrainian cities, targeting, among other places, a children’s hospital in Kyiv. According to the government, Ukraine’s largest children’s medical center, the Okhmatdyt Hospital, which performs around 7,000 complex surgeries annually, diagnoses and treats hematological diseases, treats children with cancer, and provides bone marrow transplants, was heavily damaged.
The attack affected several hospital buildings, including the newest one built in 2020, which was equipped with modern medical equipment.
“We all saw what happened two days ago when Mordor missiles hit many different buildings, including the children’s hospital. It is clear that this is a very important infrastructure for Ukrainian society and the state,” said Prime Minister Ingrida Šimonytė.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced on Wednesday that the death toll from Russian attacks has risen to 43.
