An open and international enviroment

Lithuania offers a dynamic environment for artistic exchange, where local and international creators are encouraged to experiment, collaborate and develop new ideas. Across the country, residencies, cultural spaces and festivals bring together artists, curators, writers, performers and researchers in settings that support both focused practice and meaningful connection. From Vilnius to Nida and Kaunas, Lithuania’s cultural landscape combines strong institutions, independent initiatives and an outward-looking creative community.

A Home for Creative Exchange

Rupert is one of Lithuania’s leading centres for contemporary art, residencies and alternative education. Founded in 2012, it brings together artists, writers, curators and other cultural practitioners through residencies and a para-academic programme that supports self-directed learning, collaboration and critical exchange. Now based in central Vilnius, Rupert continues to play an important role in connecting Lithuanian and international creators and fostering ambitious new work.

Inspiration on the Dunes

Located on the Curonian Spit, Nida Art Colony of the Vilnius Academy of Arts offers one of the country’s most distinctive spaces for artistic and intellectual production. Bringing together artists, researchers, writers and curators from Lithuania and abroad, it provides time and space for concentrated work in a unique natural setting. Its international residency programme and public activities make it an important platform for contemporary cultural dialogue.

An Urban Platform for Independent Creation

SODAS 2123 in Vilnius is a self-governed cultural complex run by the Lithuanian Interdisciplinary Artists’ Association. Bringing together artists’ studios, rehearsal spaces, workshops, exhibition areas and offices for cultural organisations, it supports a broad range of creative practices. Its residency programme welcomes artists and researchers working across disciplines, offering an open environment for experimentation, exchange and community building.

Where Contemporary Art Meets the City

Kaunas continues to strengthen its role as an important centre for contemporary culture in Lithuania. Institutions such as Kaunas Artists’ House create space for curatorial experimentation, artistic research and public engagement, while international residency initiatives further connect the city with wider European creative networks. Together, they reflect Kaunas’s growing visibility as a place for exchange, reflection and collaboration.

A Stronghold for the Performing Arts

In Vilnius, Menų spaustuvė (Arts Printing House) is a key platform for the performing arts, supporting theatre, dance, circus and interdisciplinary work. Located in the Old Town, it combines artistic production, residencies and international cooperation, creating opportunities for both Lithuanian and foreign artists to develop and present new work.

A Place for Writers and Translators

Lithuania’s residency landscape also extends into literature. In Nida, the International Centre for Translators and Writers offers writers and translators a setting that encourages concentration, exchange and creative development. Through residencies, seminars and other activities, it contributes to Lithuania’s wider cultural dialogue and international literary connections.

Festivals that Bring Ideas into Motion

Lithuania’s festivals play an equally important role in sustaining creative exchange. The Baltic Triennial remains one of the region’s best-known contemporary art events, while Vilnius Film Festival Kino Pavasaris and its industry platform Meeting Point Vilnius connect audiences and professionals from across Europe. ArtVilnius continues to bring together galleries, artists and collectors from Lithuania and abroad, and Druskininkai Poetic Fall offers a longstanding meeting point for poets, critics, publishers and readers. Together, these events show how cultural exchange in Lithuania is not only supported through residencies and institutions, but also renewed through regular international gatherings.

Open, Connected and Creative

What makes Lithuania especially attractive to creators is the way its cultural field combines accessibility with ambition. Institutions, independent spaces and festivals are closely connected, making it possible for ideas to move between research, production and public presentation. For artists and cultural professionals looking for an engaged, collaborative and internationally minded environment, Lithuania offers both space to create and a strong network to grow within.
